Economist and politician

After graduating in Economics in Siena and obtaining a Master’s degree at the London School of Economics, he worked in the research department of the Bank of Italy and then at Eni. Since 1988 he has worked for the International Monetary Fund, for which he has held various positions in various departments, including from 2008 to 2013 that of Director of the Tax Affairs Department. From 2013 to 2014 he was Extraordinary Commissioner for the review of public expenditure, appointed by the Letta government. From 2014 to 2017 he was Managing Director of the IMF. Since 2017 he has been director of the Observatory on Italian Public Accounts of the Catholic University of Milan and visiting professor at Bocconi University. On May 28, 2018, in a political stalemate more than eighty days before the general elections, he was appointed by the President of the Republic S. Mattarella to form a new government, a position that he accepted with reservation, a mandate that he resigned on May 31. He is the author of numerous essays on fiscal and monetary policies and institutions and on inflation. In the 2022 general elections he was elected to the Senate in the ranks of the Democratic Party. He was a guest of the Liberevento Festival in 2021 with the book “All’inferno e ritorno” (Ed. Feltrinelli).
