Psychiatrist and sociologist

Educator, essayist and columnist, he graduated in Medicine and Surgery in 1976 and then in Sociology in 1980, then obtained the specialization in Psychiatry. After graduation, he spent three years at the psychiatric hospital in Arezzo, one of the so-called “open asylums”, he decided to leave Italy and, before moving to India, worked in various countries, including Denmark and the United Kingdom. He then taught in Toronto, Rio de Janeiro and Harvard. Back in Italy he accepts the invitation of Franco Basaglia, who proposes to follow him to Rome where they begin their collaboration. After a second degree in sociology he wrote several volumes on topics of great social relevance pertinent to psychiatry. He collaborates with various institutions (regions, municipalities and the Ministry of Health) on important projects and research, without ever interrupting his dense activity as a writer and popularizer, which is also enriched by several fiction books. Engaged for years on the issues of youth problems, suicide, unemployment and social hardship, since ’89, for a certain period he taught as an adjunct professor of Social Psychiatry at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Naples and continued as a professor of Youth Cultures and Languages at the degree course in Communication Sciences of the University of Siena. In over forty years of career he has published, in Italy and abroad, numerous scientific articles, non-fiction books and novels. Often a guest of in-depth broadcasts and talk shows, he participates as a commentator and expert on issues pertinent to the family and social distress in general. He was a guest of the Liberevento Cultural Festival in 2021 with the book “Oltre la tempesta” (Ed. Mondadori).
