When one of the cigar makers – the tobacco manufacturers – goes to ask her for help, Clara Simon doesn’t know what to do. She is a beautiful girl, with those almond-shaped eyes inherited from her mother, a port Chinese who, despite her class differences, had married the navy captain Francesco Paolo Simon. But then she died in childbirth and her husband ended up missing in the war. Thus, Clara lives with her grandfather, one of the most prominent men in Cagliari, and works at the «Unione», even if she cannot sign the pieces: because she is a woman, and above all because in the past her tension towards justice and her need for truth got her in trouble. But the cigarmaker explains to her that the piciocus de crobi, the miserable children of the market, are disappearing one after the other and, when faced with the news of a small corpse found in the salt pan, she Clara is unable to stifle her investigative instinct. Thanks to the help of the faithful Ugo Fassberger, editor of the newspaper and his childhood friend, and to the carabinieri lieutenant Rodolfo Saporito, a Neapolitan recently moved to the city and sensitive to his charm, this girl, determined and ready to defend the weakest, crosses a Cagliari far from any stereotype, to reveal its black and wicked heart.
