“Don’t you think the PCI should now change its name?” is the question addressed to Achille Occhetto, leader of the largest and most anomalous Communist Party in the West, on the day the Berlin Wall falls. From that November 1989 many things will change as a world ends, history accelerates and the Italian Left struggles to keep up. That of its metamorphosis, from the turning point to today, is a story that passes through many leaders and is delivered to a present full of challenges. And it is a colorful and painful story of the people, which intertwines symbolic life paths: from Berlinguer’s mechanic-painter to the companion who stole Stalin’s portrait. In his great self-portrait of Italian communism, Luca Telese makes the protagonists speak, the facts, the memories, taking us between analysis, epic and testimony up to the scandal of “scrapping”, the season that risked sacrificing a century of collective commitment.
